Dr. Agustin Stahl – La Naturaleza es Vida/Nature is Life

Dr. Agustín Stahl is known worldwide as the first Puerto Rican-renowned scientist. Although of medical profession, he dedicated his life to studying and teaching natural science in Puerto Rico, making great contributions by making numerous watercolors and drawings of plants and insects during the 1870 and 1880. All this was part of his studies of nature and flora of Puerto Rico.

His paintings were found after his death in 1922 at his old desk in Bayamón. His works, amounting to more than one thousand (possibly 3000) in total but only 722 of them are known. The works that are displayed in the gallery are scanned and edited versions since its original deterioration due to his antique. His greatest contribution to science was the Book of Studies on the Flora of Puerto Rico.

Dr. Stahl collected about 1400 specimens of plants in order to describe and document the occurrence of these on the island, among other things. When visiting the gallery, I saw first instance how great were his works. Seeing each with great detail showed me that he was very passionate about his study of the flora of Puerto Rico. I recognized many of the plants painted on the gallery, as many tend to be very common in different areas of the island. I understand that he did this because photography by  the time was not a very good resource to document what he wanted so the painting was his best option.

For someone hijacked by science and studies, he has impressed me so much for drawing and painting almost as a painter dedicated to his profession. It gets to show that anyone can have two totally different passions and thus the time to join them together to make them the best they can.

El Dr. Agustín Stahl es conocido mundialmente como el primer científico puertorriqueño de renombre. Aunque

medico de profesión, dedico su vida al estudio y la enseñanza de las ciencias naturales en Puerto Rico, realizando grandes aportaciones al hacer numerosas acuarelas y dibujos de plantas e insectos durante las décadas de 1870 y 1880. Todo esto formó parte de sus estudios de la naturaleza y flora de Puerto Rico.

Sus pinturas fueron encontradas luego de su muerte en el 1922 en su antiguo escritorio en Bayamón. Sus obras, ascienden a mas de mil (posiblemente 3000) en total pero hoy día se conocen 722 de ellas. Las obras que son mostradas en la galería son versiones digitalizadas y editadas ya que sus originales tienen bastante deterioro debido al tiempo que ha pasado. Su contribución mas grande a la ciencia fue el Libro de Estudios Sobre la Flora de Puerto Rico.

El Dr. Stahl coleccionó aproximadamente 1400 especímenes de plantas con el objetivo de describir y documentar la ocurrencia de estas en la Isla, entre otras cosas. Al visitar la galería, vi de primera instancia lo bien trabajadas que fueron sus obras. Al ver cada una con gran lujo de detalle y color me demostró que era una persona muy apasionada sobre su estudio acerca de la flora de Puerto Rico. Pude reconocer gran parte de las plantas pintadas en la galería, ya que muchas suelen ser muy comunes en diferentes áreas de la isla. Entiendo que él hizo esto ya que para el tiempo la fotografía no era muy buen recurso para documentar lo que el quería así que la pintura fue su mejor opción.

Para ser alguien acaparado por las ciencias y estudios, me impresionó que tuviera tanto arte para poder dibujar y pintar casi igualmente que un pintor dedicado a su profesión. Me da a demostrar que cualquiera puede tener dos pasiones totalmente diferentes y así a la vez poder juntarlas al unísono para hacer de ellas lo mejor que pueda.
